According to Wikipedia, Artificial Intelligence(AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals.
It is the stimulation of human intelligence processes by machines, for problem solving. Examples include Siri and Alexa. AI started after WorldWar II.
In the mid- 1950’s, pioneers of Artificial intelligence set themselves an impossibly lofty but well defined mission to recreate human intelligence in a machine. They include Marvin Minsky, John McCarthy and Herbert Simon. Over the years of development, several opinions have sprouted.
Artificial Intelligence has been conceived by most as pure evil and others with opposing views. A philosopher, Hubert Dreyfus says “it is impossible…”, computer scientist Joseph Welzenbaum says “ the idea is obscene, anti human and immoral.
AI proponent of this course Kai-fu Lee gives an insight to the understanding of the roles of AI in his book “AI SUPER-POWERS, CHINA SILICON VALLEY AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER”.
Naturally there are always two opposing sides and as we know, the human mind is capable of interpreting a particular experience or events in several ways. In drawing conclusions, there are always factors that come to play; Psychological, Environmental and Mental Therefore one must be knowledgeable in subject matters, in order to give concrete and clear opinions.
The invention of AI has posed several questions on the minds of people both young and old alike. Questions with no answers, curious minds in need of deeper understanding, with expectations of success and worries; Will AI outsmart people? Is AI a competitor? And most importantly will AI take our Jobs? The fear of loss of job has been one constant trend looking back at history. The industrial Revolution yet man survived. Man is a peculiar being with a high level of rationalism. A thinking being and a free moral agent capable of making decisions. The aim of AI is problem solving, AI is an invention of man, an extension of the ability of a thinking man and not a threat to man.
AI shows the extend to which the human mind is capable of developing and improving his standard of living. AI cannot undermine the Creativity of the thinking man neither his strategic implementation. AI makes decision based on existing data. It is an advantage to man. It challenges and inspires man to stretch beyond limits and aim for more.
Unlike man, Computer programs do not have IQ. They are programmed, meaning there is an extent to its limitations. Human mind goes beyond, each day we decipher and explore new ideas. Necessity they say is the mother of invention, our world is fast changing, the human mind is thinking, brilliant ideas are being materialized. Rather than bask on the euphoria of old glories, we should be charged to be innovative.
The ancient philosophy Heraclitus said “change is the only constant thing in life’. Man created and is still creating. Man has the ability to adapt therefore the fear of AI overtaking is one which has no prospect yet of actualizing yet but exist in sci-fi movies.
Artificial Intelligence is a promise, a work in progress and also a potential peril. Weigh the scales, is there a place for AI and humans as cohabit? The future will tell but the present achievements of AI speaks a lot of its benefit across the world in all spheres of human endeavours.
