- Cuppy’s saga
- Does being an artiste pay the bills?
DJ Cuppy is in the news again. Unfortunately, she happens to be in the middle of controversies.
You should have heard of the story trending about a guy named Israel, who happens to be Davido’s logistics manager, lashes the female DJ, that after the collaboration with Zlatan Ibile on the hit song “Gelato”, she did not pay Zlatan.
Wait what! He went to add that Zlatan has decided paid for his own hostel accommodation during the shoot of the video, and that’s why Zlatan has decided to cutoff his life. His words not mine.
Cuppy however was quick to react. She made is known to the world that there was not contractual breach between her and Zlatan, and she was going to sue for defamation of character. No time to a waste.
Well a lot or celebrities have reacted to this unfolding drama, including Davido. Nigerians on their part have took to their social media and reacted. Creating memes here and there as usual.. This country na cruise, abeg.
We are not dwelling on the reactions to this drama, but rather, we are going to stir some gossips concerning this issue, deal with some topics that ate relating to our spotlight incident.
Now guys, aren’t you wondering why Zlatan and Cuppy haven’t collaborated again after Gelato? Also, are you wondering what if what Israel is saying is true? For one, Israel cannot just Wake up one morning and level such allegations against Cuppy. I mean she is Otedola’s daughter for God’s sake. He (Israel) is not even representing Zlatan, he happens to be in the 30 Billion Gang. So why trash Cuppy.
Okay, there is the underlying reason, that Zlatan is very good friends with Davido, and possibly friends with Israel. Thu, you can say that this was why Israel had a platform to lash at Cuppy. But don’t you wonder if it was in one of such ‘bro discussions’ that Zlatan just blurted out what happened during his collaboration with Cuppy. A and then Israel went out and announced it to the world.
And then there is the fact that all these may be lies and false allegations.
While most people will be drawn insulting Israel for his oversabi nature; because he should have allowed Zlatan be the breaker of such news, as nothing was his business, these incidence has actually thrown light to artiste collaboration.
A lot happens behind the scenes when it comes to artiste collaborations. Most people don’t know this. They think it is just two or more persons vibing and creating a banger. My friend come off it!
There is money to be paid, there is the fear of rejection and amicable relationship.
Money To Be Paid: Cuppy’s saga just showed Nigerians that featured artist paid. Shocker right. So the higher the reputation of the artist, it just follows that the higher the price.
Also, accommodation during the shoot of the video has to be paid for the featured artist. If not wahala dey.
Is this a discouraging factor? It seems so. Most upcoming artist, who are not supported by any “body” financially, do not have the luxury of featuring the big dogs in the music industry. They can only hope that their song is a banger, and will move the big dog to notice and an jump in for a remix.
We have numerous instances. Olakira’s “Meserati” is a perfect example. Davido loved the song, and invited Olakira for a remix.
The question on your mind is that whether Davido was paid? Well, the truth about this is that, nobody really knows if a featured artist was paid or not, only by those who have close relations to the deal. It is only in controversies like Cuppy’s saga, that such information are leaked.
The Fear of Rejection: The fear of rejection is one of the associated features to artist collaboration.
Nigerians will be shocked by the number of collaborations that have not come through because of rejection. If could be rejection of the particular music (heartbreak) or rejection of the artist (ouch!).
Darey, a musician, known for his don’t “pray for me” was asked during an interview if he had been rejected, ever, concerning collaboration deals, and his answer was never. The only times collaboration hadn’t come through for him was because the other artist were really busy and all. Ain’t he lucky.
It is without a doubt that this fear has crippled a lot of possible bangers. Though it can be justified, but then not taking a risk is a risk it self.
Amicable Relationship: During a collaboration, it is very Paramount that you try to maintain a healthy and amicable relationship. One were after the collabo, you can raise your head proudly and not be bugged by failure to deliver, all round.
A relationship were both of you can jump on another banger. Not one were controversies and propaganda surrounds you.

You release a song, after everything fifteen million enters your account. This fifteen million is not going to stay unspent. So there comes strategy and investment.
Most musicians have other businesses they venture in, from clothing line to eatries. Yes something that at the end of the month you know that ‘packam! alert have entered’. It is such investment that will guarantee the steady cash flow.
