A Nigerian lady and core-supporter of president Muhammadu Buhari has called for the arrest of comedian Bovi over the controversial dressing he wore to Nigeria’s foremost award ceremony, The Headies 2021.
The popular stand-up comedian who hosted the award ceremony alongside Nollywood actress, Nancy Isime trended on social media on Monday over his shirt which was designed with a blood-stained Nigeria flag.
Bovi was hailed by Twitter with many describing his act as brave. His fashion designer was also hailed over the level of creativity that was put to achieve the dress.
He paid silent tribute to the victims of Lekki toll gate shootings during the nationwide #EndSARS protest by Nigerian youths — using his dress as the medium.
The Nigerian army was accused of being behind the shooting which claimed the lives of many youths during the peaceful protest. Although, no one has been brought to book for masterminding the barbaric act.
Despite many hailing Bovi’s act, the act didn’t go down well with others. Such is the case of Egondu Okorie, a supporter of the Buhari administration.
Sharing a passage from a section of the Nigerian constitution, Okorie who kicked against Bovi’s act said the comedian deserve to be arrested for ‘rubbishing’ the country’s flag.
Chapter 148(7) of the Nigeria’s Flags and Coat of Arms Act(1990) says; “any person who flies or exhibits the National Flag in a defaced or bad condition shall be guilty of an offence against this Act.”
The law was established to regulate the display and use of the National Flag, certain other flags and the National Coat of Arms.
“Any person guilty of an offence against this Act shall be liable to a fine of one hundred naira and in the case of a continuing offence to a fine of ten naira for every day or part of a day during which the offence is continued after the day on which such person is first convicted,” the penalty says.
